Reality Bits and Bytes.

In looking at the posts in "Tangent Time" it has been brought to my attention that many of you are fans of reality shows. While they aren't my cup o' tea, I'm more than happy to provide this spot for you guys to come and chat about them. Enjoy.

OK, I'll go first. SURVIVOR, of course, is a great show. I still haven't seen the first season! I guess it's not as much fun when you already know the outcome. Season 2, with COLBY, is still my all-time favorite. It has been getting predictable. I don't like it when they vote out the people who are most deserving to be there (Terry!). I really liked it when Tom the fireman won. He was one person who I thought really deserved to win. Sometimes I wonder about the challenges. I think they should be more tied to what you would really face if you were trying to survive on your own. I'd like to see more team building before they merge. I would love to be on SURVIVOR, but couldn't leave my kids for that long. Plus, I tend to speak before I think, and would probably piss off somebody pretty quickly. Even when I do take time to think first, I often just want to make my point anyway. Hmmm, maybe AMAZING RACE is more my style. My brother and I have talked about going on, but again, leaving the kids. That, and we'd get on each others' nerves! Nevertheless, I think we'd probably outlast at least half of the teams. My husband and I complement each other very well, so I think we would make an awesome team. Maybe when they come up with a concept where we can drag the kids and a nanny with us, that might work. Or AMAZING RACE: WEEKEND EDITION. Then we could be with the kids all week, and get a break from them on the weekends when we're Racing. Somehow, I don't think that any CBS executives are going to try to put that one on the air!

I'm a huge Survivor fan. Thursdays just aren't the same without it. I agree that they always seem to vote off the most deserving. Although I have to say I would love to have seen Cirie in the final two this year. Danielle should never have gotten as far as she did. I've been told I should apply to be on the show. But like Jess I speak before I think and if I feel I'm right about something, I'm like a dog with a bone. Too stubborn for my own good. I'd be the first one voted off. Well, maybe I could keep my mouth shut long enough to make it to the second person voted off.

I don't watch too much reality t.v. other than Survivor. An occasional episode of Amazing Race, but that's about it. Watched one episode of Hell's Kitchen. Quite frankly, had I been a contestant I would have had to hit Chef over the head with a meat cleaver!

Lostbean--who is Probst dating? I didn't keep up with that one. I'm kinda opposite of you, in that I thought one reason Terry deserved to win, other than completely DOMINATING in the challenges, was because he does have his life together. He is the definition of a survivor. You take what life gives you, and make it work.

JAS--If you and I go on Survivor on the same season, as least one of us will make it past being the first one voted off! Unless they pull a fast one and vote 2 people off at the same time, as they've been known to do! How funny would that be? At least we could bond!

I would have difficulty with the swimming parts of the challenges. And that's huge. I swim, but just, you know, fooling around with the kids. I don't think I'm a strong enough swimmer to compete with the 20-somethings.

How about a team concept for Survivor, a la Amazing Race? Me, JAS, and Lostbean on a team. There could be 12 teams, and the whole team gets voted out at tribal council. One of you guys could swim and I could...um...conjugate verbs or something.

No need to be embarassed. I wasn't offended at all. I didn't really plan to check this board because I don't really watch reality tv. I have NEVER watched Survivor.

I did watch the 1st season of the Apprentice and hated Omarossa.

OK, I don't even remember Julie from Vanuatu. Most of that season was pretty forgettable, I think.

OK, so JAS can swim, Lostbean can slingshot food to wildlife, and I'll....ooh, I know...I'm a really good proofreader! My husband is always e-mailing me reports before he submits them.

L-i-G--don't go away. You fit right in with those of us who speak (or type) before thinking things through. And probably the only person who would be offended by your comment was Omarossa herself, so don't sweat it.

Jess,

That would be hoot if both of us were on Survivor. They wouldn't know who to boot off first! Of course you're right. It would be one of those "hey, let's get rid of two at the same time" and off we would go. But we'd still get a vacation and not have to eat bugs. And we'd get to hang with Jeff.

If we go as a team with lostbean, I'm happy to do the swimming. I'm a certified diver so I think I might be able to manage. Well, hopefully. I just quit smoking so I'm expanding my lung capacity as I write!

I live in Cleveland, OH. Maybe Jess and I can train to keep our mouths shut so we don't leave LB on her own!

June 15, 2006 9:16 AM
Blogger jas65 said...

LB - wasn't a smoker when I got certified. I have a tendency to take up smoking for a few months every few years. Broke up with the boyfriend last October and started smoking. Time to quit now. I never, ever smoked as much as Shane! Can't even fathom that. Makes my lungs hurt just thinking about it! By the way, just read that he's smoking again. Smoked 4 cartons in 7 days after he was voted out. Something crazy like that.

Haven't dived in Lake Erie. Too unpredictable and I'm not that brave! A lot of people dive the shipwrecks there. It's a shallow lake so it's good for that, but because it's shallow the slightest wind can start kicking up waves. Plus the visibility sucks and the water is cold!!! I prefer the Caribbean. If I dive locally, it's in quarries. But I usually just try to get a couple dives in when I go on my annual cruise.

I don't know if training would help me with speak first, think later! Maybe we can just set it up so anytime someone does or says anything remotely stupid (I have no tolerance for stupid people) or offensive, you just smack me upside the head to keep me from opening my mouth!

With my luck, that season of Survivor would be somewhere cold. Sorry, but I'd HAVE to get myself booted the first night. I do not like the cold.

June 15, 2006 10:13 AM
Blogger jas65 said...

Lostbean - I never thought about it that way; if it's cold, no bikini. Hmmm...maybe I could tolerate the cold. As long as it's not the Arctic. Wonder if they've ever thought of doing Survivor - Alaska. They could live in igloos. One of the challenges could be racing dog sleds. Probably never happen. They like to pick cute young guys and girls and send them somewhere warm so they all walk around half naked. Not that I mind watching some of these hot young guys.

Yeah, boys. Some men just can't handle strong, independent women. Their loss.

June 15, 2006 11:30 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Girls, you just need to find a man who is confident enough in himself to enjoy the independence that you show. Take it from me--find a man who is about 10 years older than you and has already "found" himself. My husband is several years older than I am, and when we first started going out, I described myself to him as "a strong, independent woman of the nineties." Older men who have their shit together are very attractive, I think. Much more so than men who are still searching for what they want to do with their lives.

Lostbean, I'm with you. I just don't have it in me to lay low! I am what I am. Maybe I'll take Jess' advice and go with an older man. Well, older than I normally do. Then again, maybe I should go significantly younger. Isn't that the new trend? Maybe I can get one before he becomes a complete moron and train him the right way.

GB, I'm not sure I've ever met a 36 year old man with his shit together. I salute you!

You guys crack me up! Before I started dating my husband, someone asked me what I was looking for in a man. My list included: employed, most-if-not-all of his own teeth, most-if-not-all of his own hair, and English-speaking. I'm happy to say my husband met all of those requirements. And still does! Like LostBean, I started with the basics and worked my way up. I did get some grief about him being older than me, but it was so nice to not be with someone who was returning to school because he worked in his chosen field for 2 years and decided he didn't like it. Or wasn't sure if he wanted kids. Or all the other bullshit I had already been through with younger men. We've been together for 10 years, and he's just as wonderful now as the day I met him. (sigh)

Jess -
See, I have a really simple list. One thing.
No short haired brunettes.
Years of field research has proven that they are all completely crackers.
Jack has a great line in Lost. He sits down beside A.L. who says something like "Don't try to tell me that everybody doesn't hate me."
He says "Only if you don't try to convince me that every woman in the world isn't crazy." or something like that.
I can SO identify.
No offense to the ladies, even the short haired brunette ones...

lostbean - you're absolutely right. A pulse would be a good starting point. And Jess' basics might be the most realistic I've ever heard. I have to add to the mix, though; ability to put down the damn toilet seat! Nothing like a middle of the night wet ass to wake you up!

GB - OMG. Good thing I'm the only one in the office this morning. They'd think I was nuts. Laughing so hard I'm crying. Well-developed...,

Jess - I hope you know how lucky you are! Who cares about the age difference? You've obviously done something right.

Lostbean,

Must have missed the Chicago burb comment. Anyway, grew up in Addison and West Chicago. Moved to Cleveland as a preteen.

The fans really picked some odd people for BB didn't they? Of course I'm not surprised that the majority of them appeared to have been chosen for their looks. Some of them are already annoying me and it's barely started.

This is one of those shows that if I can't find anything else on, I'll watch and be amused. And sometimes disgusted. And sometimes just frankly amazed at people's stupidity. It's not a show I rush home to make sure I watch. But you're right, it's something on during the summer of repeats. And at least it's not up against Lost repeats!

The house in West Chicago (Mulberry St) was near some golf course, backed right up to the prairie path. Addison (S. Iowa St.) I don't remember really what's out there. And of course we're talking many, many years ago. I have friends I go visit in Chicago (Carol Stream) every year, and they've taken back by both the houses. They're still the same. Funny how I can remember the address to both houses, but can barely remember by cell phone number.

I hope you're wrong that Lost doesn't start again until November. That would be an awful long wait. And why would they double up season 2? I'll have to do some research to see if I can find out.

As for BB, I agree, I would like to have seen Ivette back and I'm really glad they didn't vote Cowboy back on. I thought he was going to cry when he didn't get picked!

I had 7 brothers and sisters growing up. Our major form of amusement (other than torturing each other)was riding our bikes on the prairie path to this tiny little store for candy. That was back when candy was $.15. It was 30 years ago!!

I do seem to recall something about the dates for Lost, but for some reason I'm thinking that they were going to run so many, go on break, and then run the rest. Then again, I know 24 has done exatly what you're saying, starting late in the season and running no repeats. It works for them. If you hear anything more, be sure to let us all know.

What a small world we live in. Of course, I've been gone a long time, but I still remember. I loved WE. I still think Chicago is the greatest city. I'm fortunate that I can go back so easily, since I can drive in a matter of hours, or hop a a plane for $100.

Not really a Bears fan. Hard to believe, I know. Usually once a fan, always a fan. But I'm in Cleveland and love the Browns. Even if the f***ers break our hearts year after year.

I just read that Lost doesn't go into production until August 7th. Not sure what that means in terms of season start date. I don't know how far in advance they tape. OMG, you're not kidding. The timeline is totally skewed for me! I tried to have a marathon Season 1 session just to get it done, but the point of rewatching is to try to catch things I missed the first time. Rushing through would be a bit counter productive.

Love the idea for GB to be writing outlines ahead of time....hope he reads it!

Beaner--Love the idea of the LARGE cat making you look slimmer in the picture. I'm thinking I need to find myself....a sheepdog...I was going to say a Great Dane, but that would just make me look even shorter!

Unwittingly, you brought up a good point about you and JAS possibly running into each other when you both lived in We-go. It really is a small world, and how do you know that you haven't crossed paths with someone that you currently know? How many times have you met someone and thought how familiar they look, but you just can't place them?

I just had my 20-year high school reunion. I was really looking forward to it, but I was slightly disappointed. Some of my old friends don't seem to have grown up any too much. And it seemed as though everyone expected me to be the same person I was 20 years ago. I was really eager to see how everyone had changed and grown, as this was the first reunion I was able to attend. On the positive side, I think I've aged pretty well as compared to some! (Although not quite as well as others!) There were 2 or 3 people that I truly did not recognize because their looks had changed so much. I was very glad that I went, but I think that I will not drag my husband along next time. He was so BORED!

JAS, I also grew up with 7 brothers and sisters. I am #7, and the youngest girl. It is so great to have a large family. I don't think I ever had a baby-sitter that wasn't one of my brothers or sisters! And now my kids have all those cousins to play with. We are all very close. Unfortunately, I live about 200 miles from all of them, so we only get to see each other about twice a month. It's a lot better than when I lived in Miami and we only got together once or twice a year!

To anyone who has not yet read GB's novels, go. Go now. They are all good reads. The more feedback he gets, the more likely he is to quickly get more posted. I'm eager to see what happens next in each book.

Jess,

One of my sisters is passed away and we're not in any sort of contact with one of the brothers, but my two brothers, 3 sisters and 11 nieces and nephews all live within 10-15 minutes of each other. It's great. My sisters are my best friends. And it made it really convenient when my younger sister was recently on bed rest with her first pregnancy. It enabled all of us to take turns visiting, cleaning, fixing lunch and dinner. We're all very close. Only dad lives far away, in Phoenix Great vacation spot during Cleveland winters!!!

By the way, all those people at your reunion who you think aged better? Probably had help! At least I always like to think that when I see people I went to school with who look great!

LB - it is very strange, isn't it, how close we lived to each other and now we're here? I know exactly what Jess is talking about. You run into someone and just know you know them from somewhere? Especially when you're traveling. It's definitely a small, small world.

I'd love to try to make it to Panama City. It's not easy to get there from here. Or cheap. But things could change as time goes by. I'm already putting aside money for my post-Thanksgiving cruise, but I'll have to try to save a little more for PC.

By the way, LB, I saw at EW that you tried to GB to work on season 2 right away. I don't blame him in the least for passing! But it was worth a shot!

LB,

Did the pool and Mr. Rogers. Let's see if you remember any of the places I remember from my youth. How about the A&W Root Beer Drive ins? Or Cock Robin's? They had the best sherbet. Or, and I think I have this name right, Adventureland? It was a small amusement park. There was a sledding hill we used to go to in Addison, and then the pond we used to ice skate on. For the life of me I can't remember where they were. I'm going to have to call my dad. He'll remember. It was all so long ago. But I go back today and some many things bring back memories.

Here's a small world story from Chicago. I work with a woman, Alison. She's our regional manager and lives in Carol Stream. She's the one I go visit all the time. Anyway, turns out that one of her husband's oldest friends grew up next door to me in Addison! They moved in about two years before we moved to West Chicago.

So, are you watching BB tonight? Of course, I'm going to have to.

You guys! (Insert whining tone here.) I really want to go to Panama City with you! Beaner, you and I would almost definitely leave from the same airport, and may be on the same flight. We could start the party early! But seriously, my husband already thinks I am completely wacko for being on these boards. He keeps telling me not to arrange to meet anyone, as he is certain I will be raped and killed. You do hear horror stories, you know. Not that I think any of you are rapists and/or murderers! Is there anywhere that is having an Official Lost convention (like they do for Star Trek)? Or can we somehow make the PC trip "official," so that he would feel it was OK to give his blessing? I don't need his "permission" to go, but it would be nice if I could enjoy myself, knowing that he wasn't worried. Seriously, I would LOVE to go. And, as I'm re-entering the working world, I think I will need/deserve to do something nice for myself.

July 11, 2006 2:36 PM

Beaner, I was thinking almost the exact same thing! The only obstacle is, how do we "happen" to meet beforehand? Once we figure that one out, we're good to go. Literally!

Alison's maiden name is Azar, though she grew up in Indiana, so you probably wouldn't know her. Her husbands name is Beckmeyer. He seems to know everyone so it wouldn't surprise me if there was a connection there.

Went to Armore for kindergarden, then on to St. Josephs and then St. Marys. Yes, I'm a catholic girl.

I'm glad you have fond memories of your dad working downtown. My father worked for a great company in a very bad part of town. His memories are of being robbed at gunpoint. He started carrying a gun after that.

Speaking of downtown. There was a place, can't think of the name, but it was under the ell. They made the best caramel corn in the world. That was a huge treat for us, when dad would bring some home.

I remember riding our bikes until well after dark. You're right, those were the days, when you could sit on your porch or take a walk late a night and not worry about anyone getting shot or mugged.

I'll try to remember some other places.

Of course the one I would have been gunning for is Will. He is such an arrogant jerk. He was right. Jase and Janelle should have put him up. Why keep someone who has already won?

LB - I was thinking as you were for PC. Flying into a larger airport (Tallahasee, maybe or Jacksonville) and driving over. In fact, I'll have to check. I have an old boyfriend that I've remained friends with who lives near Jacksonville. Maybe I'll incorporate a visit with him. I just hope I have money left after my cruise to do this!

LB- I think Kaysar put them up because he's trying to "get rid of stragglers". I have no idea what that means. Does he think they don't play the game, but just slide under the radar? In any case, what an idiot. When the heck is someone going to put those jackasses Mike and Will on the block? After last night, I don't think I can watch it. Will just makes me want to vomit.

July 17, 2006 10:51 AM
Blogger jas65 said...

LB - you're right, no one wants to stir up too much as HOH in the first few weeks. They're afraid they'll become the target. But they end up making pansy decisions, like Kaysar. I can't remember who all was in the room, Howie and Janelle, maybe? They were talking to Kaysar about throwing up Will/Mike and Nakomis. A threat and a non-threat. Would have been more interesting. I just want Will gone. He did all that talking about Botox and not tanning, blah, blah, blah. I want to tell him he needs to get a real hair cut. And I would NEVER trust him as my doctor!

LB - personally, I'd like to see Nakomis stick around. She's so different from everyone else, I think it would be interesting to see the interactions as they get more involved in the game.

I'm a PB lover too! I used to sneak downstairs every night after everyone went to bed and make a sandwich. I still love it, though I eat the natural stuff and not too often. I know it's good for you, but it's also very fattening.

tvgasm is great. Never thought to go back and ready the Lost recaps, but I can't believe they would be better than GB's.

LB - you're right. Boogie might not be able to win. Then again, if it came down to him and Will in the final two, what are the odds that everyone would pick him since Will aleady won? Could happen.

When are these nitwits going to realize who is pulling all the strings in the house? It's hard to say who will be offed. I'm thinking Marcellas, but if he is, it would point fingers at Mike & Will. I don't know. This season is driving me nuts. And I'm tired of Janelle winning.

Marcallas can't give mike what erica is giveing him.Janelle is a wicked hard player,I don't realy like her but,man she can play the game.Ya can't say she dosent deserve it.I mean nobodys carring her through, shes doing it on her own.

RIP

True, Janelle is working the game, but she's also having her strings pulled and doesn't realize it, which makes me wonder how good she really is. Then again, editing could be leaving us to believe she's naive to chill town, when she really is using them. Maybe she is THAT good. If so, more power to her.

Good point about the editing.I just think, she thinks chiltown is not a thert to her. who knows.I would not last 1 week in that house.

I know what you mean. I'm not devious enough. Plus I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut. It's why I'd never make it on Survivor. I have an opinion and a need to express it.

Morning all. boogie would use anybody, game or no game.I think george would have been better off putting up,1 BB6er 1 chiltown.let the house choose.Lets see if boogie can get jannell out.Her only shot is to be put on the bloock so she can try for the veto,If she is not put then shes gone. They will throw the veto game.

LB - I just want to tell you that Janelle and Erika have to be two of the most gullible women in the world. Can they really be that clueless that they don't realize that Boogie and Will are using them? I can't stand to watch it. I just read the recaps and still get aggravated with them. UGH!

LB- I did catch the end last night. I cannot believe the Janelle won again. She is definitely on a hot streak. Much as I can't stand her, she just might deserve to win.

Erika is an idiot. I really believe Danielle would take her all the way. You know there is no way in hell that Chilltown will.

So, my Browns are playing your Bears this week. Should be a good game!

August 30, 2006 9:10 AM

I think Danielle is gone. I think chilltown knows she's a threat. And they're the only ones voting. So she's out.

The game is on here of course. I'm actually hoping to get tickets to the game, which would be cool. I think the Browns are 2-1, but you're right, they start playing the starters for most of the game so it could be very interesting.

I know what you mean about peeking fearfully. Every time we think the Browns have put together a good team, something happens. We've already lost several for the season, inlcuding LeCharles Bentley, who we picked up from the Saints. Plus we've had some Center issues. It's all a crap shoot in Cleveland.

LB - I didn't consider it mean at all. I watched part of the game and gave up at half time. The Browns were pitiful. I was just happy they weren't completely skunked. At least they put some points on the board. We're so used to bad sports teams in Cleveland. Thank goodness we have King James.

So, do you believe those two dumb bimbos on BB? Erika and Janelle give women a bad name. They don't deserve to go to the final two. They've been played too well by Chilltown.

Ding, Dong! The witch is dead! The wicked witch of Chill Town is gone!!! I hope they eat him alive in the sequester house! My only regret is that it's Ericka instead of Danielle in the final three.

Speaking of the sequester house, it looks like Baby Howie is making everyone miserable! I had forgotten how absolutely childish he can be. He's worse than bitchy Marcellas.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I hope Boogie wins. I still can't figure out how Erika made it to the final two. She certainly had no strategy or game. Scum bucket that he is, Boogie, along with Will, at least had a plan of action and stuck to it.

Boogie, Erica and Janelle were on The View this morning. I am certainly not a Rosie fan, but I admit to getting a little tickled with the way she doggedly shredded Mike Boogie's ego! I almost felt sorry for him...

It's all good! Because of the new way that they had to find contestants this year, there aren't so many people who are "full of themselves" and looking for fame and fortune in show business! That's a good thing.

It's also a learning experience for the contestants as well as for the viewers. You just can't paint anyone with a broad brush. We are all unique individuals. I loved it!

Does anyone else think that Jonathan MUST be related in some way to Alan Alda? His voice sounds exactly the same, right down to the tone and inflections.

I enjoyed the show, and wish they would have made it 2 hours instead of only one. I'm sure they had enough material. I don't think they'll keep the tribes separated for too long. I do think the losing tribe was stupid to vote off Sekou already. If they didn't know that they would eventually merge, and have it be every man for himself, they would keep the physically strongest and get rid of the true weakest link. I'll have to watch 3 or 4 more episodes before someone emerges as my favorite.

Amazing Race starts Sunday. I have my DVR set to record it. Don't know if/when I'll actually get around to watching it. I have enjoyed that show in the past, so I'll try to make time for it.

This is shaping up to be a very interesting season.

Yeah Billy must have had some really good drugs unless there was something said off camera that we did not see the only thing I heard Candice say was "WE" love you which I think was meant in a sisterly/brotherly kind of way. Boy I was as stunned as Jeff was when he said that.

Beaner! Why didn't you tell us you went to a Survivor casting call?????

I actually felt bad for Billy. I was embarrassed for him. I'm guessing he was the "weird kid" at school, and probably never had a date in his life. He was just odd. I thought they screened these people psychologically?
