Here it is people.
A nice place to come and chat about any topic that strikes your fancy.

I'm thinking of buying a new computer, here are the specs:

AMD Athlon™ 64 processor 3500+; 250GB hard drive; 1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM

Is that the standard now?

June 03, 2006 11:49 AM
Blogger Greybishop said...

That will leave my 900mhz machine in the dust.
From what my computer savvy buddies tell me, athlon is the way to go. A gig of ram is good too.
Depending on price, I'd say you're looking at a machine that would last you a few years, easy.

Thanks GB! It's $575 at Best Buy. Do you know anything about flat-panel LCD monitors?

June 03, 2006 11:58 AM
Blogger Greybishop said...

Not a lot. My buddy, Blix (link to his blog on my main page) works at a large computer chain. He's my go to guy.
$575? That's a decent price, I think. Converting currency on a Saturday hurts my head. Is that with monitor or without?

Ok, looked a little more and found a package deal: same box with monitor (not lcd) and printer for $550.

It's kinda surprising to me as well. I spent way over a $1000 for my 1st pc, some 10 years ago!

Blogger Greybishop said...

I'm planning on upgrading in the fall, after putting a dollar or two aside from my summer dj work.
Probably something similar to what you're looking at. If I buy without the monitor (I have a corner desk and a very functional 19 inch monitor that is almost like watching tv) I can get something like what you are looking at for around 650-700. Eventually, my current machine will end up as a word processor in my den (Which isn't finished, so there's no great rush) and I'll need a monitor then, but splitting it up will make the purchase less painful.

Well, I don't know if I want to go into "why" I feel a urgent need to go buy a new pc...

Short version: ex, considered himself a puter geek (aka hacker), now getting "windows warnings", etc, etc, etc!

All that stuff goes against my grain, so I need a new pc!

Ok, I feel really silly asking this but here goes.... what (or who) is "EW"? I've seen many of you refer to it a number of times.

When ktwolf says private, she means in the sense that it's mostly the regulars from the ew.com board that show up, but that doesn't mean that occasional users aren't welcome. They are. Whether you surf in from ew.com or from blogspot, you are most welcome to contribute.
Abusive, over the top foul or just plain dumbass posts will be removed.
So far, not one post has had to be deleted. For that, I thank you all.

C4L--good luck with Alberto. I used to live in Miami, so I know that you get lots of warning if the hurricane is coming your way. But it's always a good idea to have those batteries and water on-hand, just in case. Do you have hurricane shutters, or do you use plywood?

Everyone else--I miss you guys. The EW board is like a ghost town. Or would that be ghost board? Hope all is well with each of you. Since no one is on, I'm heading to bed. It sure beats doing housework, which is my other option.....

To post a photo (assuming you have a blog...) sign into your blog and you will be at your dashboard. Click on change settings. From there, click on the posting tab at the top left of screen. Underneath posting, click on the picture icon (2nd from the end on the same line as the Font box). On the next screen, click on Browse to locate the picture you want to use that you have on your computer. Double click on the picture file on your computer and then it should appear in the box for adding an image. Then click Upload image at the bottom of that screen. That should post the image to your blog.

To add the picture to your profile, start from the dashboard, click on change settings, then Posting tab. Then click on edit posts (under posting tab next to create. Click on the Edit box next to the post your created above, that should bring up the picture you just posted. At the top right click on edit html tab (next to compose). Highlight the picture file carefully, starting with the "http" through ".jpg". Right click and copy. Then click Back to Dashboard at top right of screen. When you are back at the Dashboard, click on edit profile at the right. Go down to Photograph URL and paste into the box. Click Save at the bottom of that page. Then click Back to Dashboard at top left. Click on Create post, on this screen click on status (third option down from create undering Posting tab). Then click to Republish blog.

That should do it! Gosh, I hope so. If there's a quicker way, I haven't found it, but this worked for me!

Lostbean: I am looking forward to Big Brother too. I like some of the reality shows because I find it interesting to watch how people interact with each other (especially if it's in an interesting setting such as Survivor or Amazing Race). I also watch the Lost reruns.

Last week was really bad for TV and this week is worse. Since I don't actually sit down and watch a lot of TV, I keep a calendar with the shows I want to see on it. Only 3 shows last week and 1 (Lost) this week!!! Maybe I should try to sit down and read a book out of my bookcase full of unread (or partially read) books!

Lostbean, are you following me? I lived in Miami in the 90s, also. Then I moved to Baltimore/DC, and now you are in NoVA. Small world, huh? Where is your favorite place to live? Mine was Fredericksburg, VA. I thought I would like Miami, but I didn't. I like where we are now, but I think that has more to do with stability in my life and raising my family than it does with actual geography. I am also a big Survivor fan, and it all started with COLBY!! I still think that was the best season. I would LOVE to be on Survivor, but I don't think I could be away from my kids for that long. (Although on those days that require M&Ms, I would probably say something different!) I also really enjoy Amazing Race, but definitely not the family edition. The only shows I really make time for are LOST and Survivor.

As for the reality show stuff, never watched one, unless you count "Junkyard Wars" and half a season of "The Apprentice" (I was dating an apprentice junkie, she had a degree, I don't and it was the season of streetsmarts vs. booksmarts. I was never very interested and stopped watching when they mixed up the teams.). So, I won't participate, but I'd be happy to add a space for all you addicts. Watch for it over the weekend.

Lostbean--I know what you mean about missing VA. It's so pretty there. When I lived in Fbg, I would go to Charlottesville just to walk around UVA, exploring, check out Monticello, etc. There is so much history there. I really got interested in the Civil War when I was in school in Atlanta. Have you ever lived there? (I'm only half-joking about that!) It really comes "alive" for you when you transplant from the North to the South. I used to think it was morbid when people would visit battlefields. Now I totally understand. If I were single again, no kids, etc., I am almost certain I would return to Fbg. Right after I won Survivor, of course!

There are good and bad with bartending, as with any job. I try to remember our customers (most of the time) are there to have fun. Sometimes customers ask some of us why we aren't smiling....our classic reply is "Do you walk around at your job smiling all the time?"

I have to say it is very nice as "my office" window looks out at the sand and water!!!!!!

Hey LostBean--I know you were in NJ this weekend, but it looks like Alexandria and all of NoVa got slammed pretty hard with the rain, floods, and mudslides. Are you affected at all, at home or at work? We had a lot of rain here, but no problems. We are actually happy for the rain because we just put down all that sod. Hope everything is OK with you.

About the biggest problem we have is mushrooms are starting to grow in all that new sod in our back yard. Other than that, no worries.

We are having a HUGE 4th of July party. We started back in April to get our back yard ready for it. We refuse to entertain the idea that it may rain. If it does, I'm going to end up with a TON of swimsuit-clad people in my house. We decided to have our party on the actual 4th instead of the weekend so that everyone can go to or host other parties, then be here in the middle of the week. We put on our own fireworks show. My husband is really zany about the holidays. On Halloween, he makes a haunted garage, and has my mother dress as a witch to give out hot chocolate. Hmmm, he dresses his mother-in-law as a witch.... At Christmas, I call him Clark Griswald because he puts so many lights on the house. He said his dad always did stuff for holidays, and he wants to make sure his kids remember their dad the same way.

June 27, 2006 1:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

LostBean--you are certainly welcome at our house for the 4th, even if it is still raining. Our motto is always "the more the merrier." Yes, we have a pool. We used to have an above-ground one that someone gave us. It exploded last year. Apparently, it was our own fault because we had a leak and didn't know it. The chlorine eroded the aluminum, and the side just collapsed. THAT was an interesting day, I can tell you. We were very fortunate that no one was hurt. We were going to get another above-ground, but bigger. When we started to compare prices, it was just a bit more to get an inground, fiberglass pool. (That is, until we added the pavers, the landscaping, and the tiki bar). Anyway, we've done it all ourselves, so that saved all that money on labor. Our July 4th party is not only to celebrate Independence Day, but all of our hard work, also. Now, about that rain....it seemed to be drying up this afternoon, and I finally got my boys and my dog out for a walk. I'm not exaggerating when I say we made it about 25 feet and it started to pour again! We have a LOT of water, but no flooding, so we're thankful for that. Anyone else having any weather-related problems?

Where I live in North Texas we are having the opposite problem. We have been in a drought for the last three years with no signs of letting up. I don't miss the hail, floods and tornados (it rarely JUST rains here) but this is ridiculous. We are under severe water-rationing. Last week Houston had more rain in 2 days than we've had in the last two years! Too bad you guys can't bottle it up and ship it here.

So, here I am, surfing GB's site, minding my own business, when my phone rings. It's the director of my sons' school, asking if I'd like a job for next year. Um, yeah! I was hoping for a nice part-time, 3 afternoons a week kind of thing. No. She wants me to TEACH kindergarten. I'll just set up an IV line for the M&Ms. I've only ever taught college freshmen. My degree is in Psychology, not Education. I'm really on the fence about taking it. I THINK I can do it, but what if I really suck at it and damn all those kids to hating school because their kindergarten teacher was a moron?

LostBean--I think I would call the Health Dept. first, then make my way down the list of anyone else I could think to call. Glad your sun is finally shining. We don't have sun here yet, but it's NOT raining right now. I have high hopes for the afternoon.

I'm lying alone, with my head on the phone, thinking of you till it hurts, I know you hurt too, but what else can we do, tormented and torn apart. I wish I could carry your smile in my heart, for times when my life seems so low, would make me believe what tomorrow could bring when today doesn't really know, doesn't really know.

Everybody sing:
I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you, I know you were right believing for so long, I'm all out of love, what am I without you, I can't be to late to say that I was so wrong.

Let me tell you, I would (on most days) rather have Air Supply running through my head, than some of the songs I having running through my head after working at the bar!!! Towards the end of the night it's usually pretty hardcore rap, and although I like it, some of the lyrics are not really what I want running through my mind first thing in the morning!!!!

Hey JenMin. I saw you on the map. I lived in Fredericksburg for a few years in the 90s. Of all the places I've been, that was my favorite. I lived in Culpeper for a year before moving to Fbg. Are you near King George? Caroline County? I absolutely love it there.

After my night of party with the yung'uns, I was wondering, how many of you would go out drinking and dance on the bar at a place like Coyote Ugly?

I've seen that too, actually caught a few minutes of it again this weekend. I would (probably) never do the audition thing, I'm just wondering who of you out there would dance on a bar during a night of fun!

C4L: I'm with you on hanging with younger people. My oldest friend (age wise) is 8 years younger than me. Some friends are half of my age (I'm 63). None seem to mind that I no longer drink alcohol or dance on bars.

July 10, 2006 12:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey guys. I would probably dance on the bar. I would probably be "booed" off the bar. Or I would have drank so much to get me up there in the first place, I would lose my balance and fall off. In any event, I would do it, but not remain up there for long.

How many of you would go native on a nude beach?

July 10, 2006 1:24 PM
Blogger jas65 said...

I've gone semi-native. Punta Cana two years ago. A lot of Europeans. They do everything around the pool and beach topless. I figured, what the heck, I don't know any of these people. And when in Rome...

Blogger jas65 said...

I'm not 20 anymore myself (all you over 40's know what I'm talking about), but let me tell you, alot of these Europeans should not have been nude. Then again, did you ever notice it's always the people who SHOULDN'T be that are?

GreyBishop, I like Beaner's idea of you sending us your autograph. (Note I totally stole her idea, and included myself in the autograph-receiving!) BUT, I definitely think that you should make us work for it. Like, the person with the most useful comment(s) gets the first autograph of each book, with a personal note of thanks or something. (I'm only half-joking on this.) I think I have a fair shot at any of them except THE MARK OF THE ONE. I just can't get the thought of Peter killing my beloved Harry Potter out of my head. I know, totally different book, but Harry IS a wizard. Maybe Peter could kill wizards, but call them something else, like....trethorns. I think you'd do better at making something up; I'm not very good at inventing words, as you can see!

I have only a minute to give a quick recap of my meeting with Beaner. Good news--she is EXACTLY as I thought she would be. She is, in fact, not a 300-lb. man, and I have been neither raped nor murdered. Bad news--our time together went MUCH too quickly. We did manage to get a picture, so hopefully she will be able to get that posted. I've got to run, but will give more details soon.

OK, the full story of meeting Beaner...I enlisted my friend Carolyn to go, and another friend chumped us. We got to Let's Eat about 15 minutes early, and were treated to some yummy goodies that they had already prepared for us. I saw Beaner walking in, and knew immediately that it was her. We hugged, and both started talking and giggling at the same time. I gave her a little candle holder that looks like a flip flop, because it was the best thing I could find to make me think of the beach. The candle is my new favorite scent--kiwi fig. I know, it sounds weird, but it smells great. I told her it must become part of her LOST ritual to burn the candle while watching the show. The Let's Eat staff offered us each a glass of wine. Beaner had said she was "wicked shy" without a computer or a glass of wine, so I told the staff I knew she needed one. My friend Carolyn needed one, too, just to keep up with us! I go no where without my 7-11 diet Coke, so I was set. By the way, I don't believe for one minute that Beaner is shy! Even without the wine. Then they put aprons on us and we got to work. It was actually a lot of fun. LostBean said, "If cooking were really this easy, I'd do it!" She made 3 meals, and I made 5. Carolyn made 8, so when Beaner and I were done, we stood around and distracted her. GB, Beaner was able to use your line, "I'm an English major; I was told there would be no math." She was dividing her recipe for spinach lasagna into two smaller pans, and was doing great until she had to split 1/3 of a cup of something. When we were completely finished, the Let's Eat staff helped us to get all of our stuff packed up, and carried it to our cars for us. Then we enlisted one of them to take some pix of us. Beaner had already scoped out a good spot by a palm tree (who knew there were palm trees in Maryland!?), and we clicked some pix. We decided that we will try some other similar places together. So now I'm on a quest to see what else is out there. It was so great to finally meet one of you guys! And LostBean is exactly what I thought she'd be like. Her personality really comes through on this board! We talked about you all a lot, and how we've come to think of you as friends. We both laughed when we saw Chicken with Goat Cheese on the menu for August. In fact, we talked about you guys and LOST so much that Carolyn asked to borrow my Season One DVDs so that she can catch up with us. It was a great day, a fun time, and I'm really glad we got to meet. Can't wait till the next one.

Jess: Happy to hear that you and Beaner had a good time and nobody was attacked by an internet pervert!

You mentioned in a previous conversation that your family lives east of Pittsburgh. I grew up in Wilkinsburg and my parents now live in Eastmont (on Route 22 near Monroeville). Are you familiar with either of those places?

July 29, 2006 11:03 PM

LiG, my family is from even further east, but I've heard of Monroeville. I think there used to be a big mall there...? I don't recall ever hearding of Wilkinsburg or Eastmont, sorry! It's been about 20 years since I lived in PA. I love where I am right now, but Virginia was probably my favorite place to live. The weather was mild, and the countryside is gorgeous.

Jess: OK. I just thought we might be having another "it's a small world moment". It's been 42 years since I lived there.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know, it really is a small world. We may have crossed paths at the Monroeville Mall many moons ago. (Sorry, alliteration got the better of me.) And wow, 42 years since you've lived there. No wonder you consider Texas "home" now. How does it compare to PA? I find that, when I go back to visit, I notice how beautiful the mountains are. When I lived there, they were an OBSTACLE in getting from Point A to Point B. It seemed I was always walking or biking up a mountain, or trying to drive in the the winter and sliding down one. Now, I see that they are really beautiful, especially when the leaves change COLOUR in Autumn.

Beaner, I'm glad you like the candle. Of course you can burn it when watching Season One! Anything Lost-related. I can't tell you where I got it--if you want another one, you'll have to wait until we get together again. Just kidding--I got it at a grocery store called Lauers. The name of the scent is kinda strange, but I really like the way it smells, too.

Yes, Palm trees in an "Enchanted Forest" in Maryland is weird! Were the Palm trees growing indoors or outside? Speaking of weird, there is a place on Galveston Island called Moody Gardens (Moody is an old family name from the area). In one area of the gardens, there is a path with Palm trees growing on the left and Pine trees growing on the right sides of the path.

Jess: Arkansas is a lot like PA but Texas is very different. The entire coastal region is flat, flat and more flat! Dallas is only slightly less flat (rolling prairie). The prettiest parts are right in the middle of the state (Austin to San Antonio and points west) called the Texas Hill Country. Texas is a big state and I guess it has a little bit of everything --- it just takes a while to get there!

I do miss seeing the mountains but don't miss having to drive them in the winter. Some people go to the water when vacationing, I go to the mountains!

Hello all. I've been gone from the computer for a while, but other than recaps, it doesn't look like I've missed too much. Hopefully everyone is outside, enjoying the last of the summer.

I took my 14-yr-old daughter to Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp last week. She is a huge fan, and she had a blast! She made a poster to get Ben Roethlisberger's attention, and it worked. She was thrilled when he pointed at it and waved at her. When practice was over for the day, several of the players stopped by the fans to sign autographs. Most notably, three of them even agreed to have their picture taken with her--Mark Brubaker (Rookie, probably be traded or make the practice team. Cutie-patootie!), Chris Gardocki, and Jeff Reed. All three of those guys were so sweet to take time to sign autographs for each and every person who wanted one. They were out there for about two hours.

I don't think she's come down off of Cloud Nine yet. It was a real spur-of-the moment decision to go to Training Camp. And even though it was HOT, I'm really glad we went.

We've got a busy 2 weeks ahead of us, and then back to school. Even though we are having a great summer, I think we're all eager to get back into a "normal" routine.

Finally, my friend Carolyn, who went to Let's Eat with Beaner and me, is on Episode 12 of Season One. I'm hoping we'll see her on here and the EW board soon!

No, we didn't get Ben's autograph....but he did tell my daughter to "sshhhhh!" She kept calling his name when he was trying to talk to someone, and he finally turned around, waved at her again, and said, "Shh, I'm talking." She was tickled that he even acknowledged her. She got autographs and pix from the other three I mentioned. Mark Brubaker gave her a hug, and Jeff Reed was great. We have this page in our little newspaper that when people travel, they get their picture in front of a landmark, and they are holding a copy of the newspaper. She got Jeff Reed to take a pic with her and the paper. She can't wait to see herself in the newspaper.

Being from western PA originally, being a Steelers fan was bred into me. When I lived in Miami, I was a Dolphins fan. It was OK because Dan Marino was from Pittsburgh. Now, living in Baltimore, I am somewhat of a Ravens fan. It's tough when I watch the Steelers and Ravens play each other. As long as I have peanuts and a bottle or two of MGD, it's all good!
